ABOUT

"Springfield-based pop star makes her indie debut with a hauntingly beautiful album"

"Mia Frerking is one of the scene's breakout stars"

All my life I have been surrounded by music. Listening In the car, my dad playing guitar, my sisters playing piano and I have always enjoyed it. One of my very first memories is being in the car and listening to music with my mom and my sisters. In the car, no matter where we were going, we would always have music on like the Dixie chicks or Coldplay and I would always sing along. Even if my sister, Gabi was yelling at me to shut up I would always keep singing. One specific memory is listening to Clocks by Coldplay and always falling asleep to it. Music was my escape from the madness that was going in my world. I started taking piano lessons when I was five. A teacher I really liked was Taylor who was very patient and would always take his time with me. One song I learned from him was a song was called “Interlude” by William Gillock. A recording of me playing it was used in a short film which was cool for a seven year old.  Within a short period of time, Taylor moved away and I started taking lessons with Bill Huff who taught me how to play the piano and sing at the same time.  He helped me learn popular songs and taught me how they are written. Bill really inspired me to want to write my own songs and one night I started to write songs because I was sad and feeling left out among my friends. I felt lonely and moody. When I started write I felt like I was flying. I created a melody and discovered the chords and wrote the lyrics. That song was “The Real Me”, the first track, on my album, Dreams. Thank you to Bill Huff for awesomely playing the piano on that track. At the time when I wrote it, I felt really proud of it. I got opportunity to sing it at church and on tour in various places with the church youth choir in Denver and Chicago. Now I feel like it’s a really cheesy song – But perfect for a Disney channel movie!

To be continued . . .
